Week of Feb 20-24

Monday:
Tuesday:
We learned the jobs of Y today.  Y at the beginning of a word is a consonant.  Y with skills 1 or 2 says the short i sound.  Y with skills 3 or 4 says the long i sound.  Y with skill 5 is silent.

In math, the children used their coins to solve story problems.  Then they counted up coin amounts to see which items they could purchase.

We read from our reading books.  Our story this week is Nutik, the Wolf Pup.
Our letter for handwriting was the lowercase y.  Yippee for our all stars today!

We had our last choir practice before we sing at the 10:45 service THIS Sunday.

We did a study guide for Social Studies.  We also learned more about President Abraham Lincoln.  In honor of President's Day, we will be learning about some of our Presidents this week.

We reviewed our irregular verbs and learned about contractions today in Grammar.

Wednesday:

Today's Chapel was led by the 3rd graders in Mrs. Jacques class.  We learned about how when we have a bad day and do something hurtful to others it often moves from person to person.  We need to work on being nice to our friends.

We learned about making a dollar.  The children have been doing this for a while when we count our coins every week.  This week, the 2nd graders collected $70.  Great job.

We learned about AU and AW making the aww sound during reading.

We got into small groups for a practice social studies test. We also learned about President George Washington.

We finished by working with more contractions.
Thursday:
We finished another of our Religion books today.  We read about God's People Returning Home.

In math we did dollars and cents.  We added up the dollar amount and the amount of the cents.
We had our field trip to Nino Salvaggio's today.  The children learned about different services they provide as well as the different types of fruits and vegetables they sell.  They learned about exotic fruits like the passion fruit, coconut, and star fruit.  The children took a trip in the back into the big fridge.  They saw where the trucks unload the goods and met Sam the receiving manager.  They saw fresh pasta being made in the back room.  We walked through and saw the meats, cheeses and seafoods too.   Then we took a trip in the freight elevator!  We saw the spot where ALL the signs for the store are made.  Then we went and had a snack of fresh squeezed orange juice and mixed popcorn.
When we returned to school we had an international taste fest.  Each child had a chance to taste papaya, passion fruit, star fruit and kumquats.

We had the lowercase w today.  WOW was I impressed.  Jacob and Peyton were our all stars!

We played Jeopardy today to review for Social Studies.

We proved our Many Jobs of Y words in phonics, and practiced inferences in reading.

We watched Mouse and the Motorcycle today as our BLURT dessert.

Friday:

We began with our Social Studies Test.  This test seemed harder for the students this time.  Still many A's but not as many as normal.

We added and subtracted money today in math.  It took the children some time to get back to regrouping since we have been counting coins.

Then we practiced our chapel words and sang our special song!

We had Art this afternoon and parents came in for games.
