Thursday, December 8th

I hope everyone enjoyed their day off yesterday.  Us teachers were here working hard :)

Today's devotion was about Jesus being our light.  We talked about how it would be to walk around in darkness.  We discussed how Jesus lights our world and without Jesus we would be walking in darkness.  Just like last years theme told us, we need to shine our light to reach those who are still walking in darkness.

Today in math we learned a few new ways to measure how much things weigh.  We learned about ounces and pounds as well as grams and kilograms.  We learned that 1 oz is about a slice of bread and 1 lb is a loaf of bread.  We learned 1 g is about 1 peanut and 1 kg is about 1 dictionary.  It helped when the children had real life objects to compare it to.   We also learned about area.  We counted the squares in the shapes to see the square units.

Our letter today for handwriting was the lowercase s.  Many of our classmates have this letter in their first, middle and last name.  Check out today's all stars!

We read Officer Buckle and Gloria with partners today.  Then we talked about the illustrations to see what is tells us.

For Christmas Around the World we traveled to Sri Lanka and made paper chains.

We finished our reindeer stories today and made our reindeer.  They look so good!  I am very proud!

WE HAD SNOW TODAY AT RECESS!  THE CHILDREN HAD SOO MUCH FUN!

The children were excited when they arrived this morning! Der Nikolaus came last night and left them candy canes in their shoes!

Today's devotion was about how we are the sheep and go astray and how Jesus is the lamb who died for us to save us and bring us back to him.

Today for phonics we learned the 3 sounds that the suffix ED makes.

Today for handwriting we had the lowercase u.  Check out our all stars!

In social studies we learned about our Heroes and Holidays.  We watched the video about Paul Bunyan to learn about Folk Tales about heroes.

For Christmas Around the World we went to Italy and wrote notes to our parents explaining how we will be good!!

Monday, December 5th

Our devotion today was about how God created all things.  We brainstormed things he created.  Then we talked about when he created these things God said it was good.  But then sin entered the world.  We talked about how even in the beginning God had a plan to save us by sending his son.  We went around and did prayer requests.  Then each child drew a cross on another students hand.

In math we worked more with inches.  The children had to measure different objects.  When they were done, the children went around the room and measured different real life objects.  We also had a subtraction sheet.  After break we will be doing subtraction, so I want to get their brains ready for that!

Kenadie brought in a snack that she made for the class over the weekend!  We had chocolate covered pretzels with sprinkles!  Thanks for sharing with us!

The children started their transitional writing piece.  They had to use First, Then, Next, Finally.  They had to write how to train a reindeer.  We brainstormed skills each reindeer would need.  The children had to pick 4 skills and how they were going to train them to do each skill.  The writing is very cute! We have some great writers this year!

In phonics the children learned how to add suffixes to phonetic skills 1 and 2.  For phonetic skill 1 you double the ending consonant then add the suffix.  For phonetic skill 2, you just add the suffix.

In Social Studies, we talked about american heritage.  We talked about different kinds of symbols of our country such as the Bald Eagle, Liberty Bell and Statue of Liberty.

We traveled to Germany today for Christmas Around the World.  We made gingerbread boys and girls.  We also placed our gym shoes on our desk. The children of Germany have a tradition where 'der Nikolaus' comes in the night between the 5th and the 6th and puts the goodies into the shoes of the children, who usually place them by their doors on the previous evening. Lets see if we get goodies tomorrow!

Friday, December 2nd

Busy Busy day here in 2nd grade!

We did a hands on math lesson this morning where we got to measure using inches and feet.  We measured different items in the room like erasers, staplers, and school boxes.  Then we measured each child in inches and in cm!  They had lots of fun measuring.

The students wrote to each other in class today.  They asked them three things and told them three things. Then they traded and answered each others questions.

We didn't have art today since Mrs. B was sick.  SOOOO we decided to travel today even though we were not planning on it.

We traveled to India and the children made bananas.  They learned that in India the children decorate banana or coconut trees instead of evergreen Christmas trees like we do.  We also made USA snowflake ornaments for our tree.

We had games this afternoon.  The children had fun!

Enjoy your weekend!  God Bless!

Thursday, December 1

Welcome to DECEMBER!

We started out our day in devotion.  We read about how we are so lucky that God loves us even though we are sinners.  We went around and did our prayer requests.  Please pray for each of the children in this classroom as well as their families.  Please pray for our mission project as we collect socks for children in our community.

In math we did line plots.  We measured every child in the class in CM.  Then we put it on a line plot.  Then each child chose 1 item from their desk to measure and we created a class line plot on the board.

Today for handwriting we had the upper case Q.  Check out these all stars from today!

In social studies we learned about Independence and the 13 colonies.

We traveled to Mexico today for Christmas Around the World.  We made paper bag pinatas.  The children could choose any animal they wanted to create as a pinata.  We put them under our tree!

In weekly reader the children read about Holiday Economics.

In music we learned about measures and bar lines.  We sang Bell Horses and clapped and patted the beat.  We also sand Yankee Doodle and You're a Grand Ole Flag to show the 2/4 time beats.

Wednesday, November 30

Mrs. Reincke led us in chapel this morning.  We learned more about Advent and we continued to prepare our hearts for the coming of our Lord.  The children learned about gratitude.  Mrs. Reincke read the same story twice but the first time the children were Me First, That's My Toy, and I Want it All.  We talked about how those are not the kind of people we want to be.  Then we heard the same story with You Go First, Let's Share and You Can Have it.  We talked about how we need to be those people.  However, we are often the not so nice people and we are thankful God loves us so much He sent down Jesus so when God sees us He sees the nice person instead of the sinful one.

In math we did more work with perimeter.  We measured shapes, added them together and came up with the perimeter.

We had extra gym today so the children went right from computer lab to gym today!  It was over an  hour of specials!  What fun!

In social studies we learned about Early America.  We talked about the pilgrims, Indians and settlers. We watched a short video to help us learn about where these people settled.

For writing today we wrote verb stories.  We chose 3 verbs; run, smile and hide.  The children had to use those verbs to create a story.  They turned out  very cute!  I hope you enjoy reading them.

Our ornament for today was a nativity scene from Brazil.  They turned out very cute!  Check them out!

Tuesday, November 29

The children started by lighting the Advent Wreath and talking about the first week of Advent known as Hope.  Our devotion was about how we wander from God and how He sent Jesus to look after and to love us.    This was our prayer:

Father, Thank you for sending Your Son.  Thank you for Your plan to rescue us and to save us.  Help me prepare for Jesus' birth.  Amen

We did more measuring today in math.  The students used their rulers and measured and also drew different lengths in centimeters.

We played Beat the Clock in phonics.  They had 1 minute to write down as many words with the CK ending as they could.  Leighton and JoVon won with 8 words!  Then we played to see who could write the most short O words.  Jacob won that round!  Then the children had CK words to prove and find.

We read with partners for reading and worked on the Long E sound spelled e, ee, ea, ey, or y.  Then the children had to do a crossword puzzle with their story vocabulary words.

3 of our friends' names start with today's handwriting letter.  The uppercase J.  Check out our all stars today!

Today for Christmas Around the World we traveled to France.  We made paper shoes and stuffed them with paper straw and hung them on our tree.

We played Verb Charades today in grammar.  The children picked a card with a verb on it and had to act it out.  Then the children guessed which verb each friend was acting out.  They all did a great job!
