Monday, November 14th

We started our day with our Lord in devotion.  We have been diving deeper into the Lord's Prayer.  Today we talked about how Jesus uses parables to talk about the Kingdom of Heaven and how God loves us so much He sent Jesus to prepare a place for us.

In math we started a new unit on measurement and geometry.  We measured things with our cm rulers.

In phonics we talked about our vowels and that we have short and long vowels. This week we will learn what makes words have short vowels!

In science we learned there are hot and cold deserts! We read from our books and watched a brainpop Jr. video to help us learn.

We began writing our persuasion letters today.  The children are pretending to be turkeys.  We are persuading the farmer not to pick us for Thanksgiving.  The children had to come up with 4 reasons why they should not be picked.

At the end of the day we had some parents come in to help with reading mentors.  I cannot believe how well they children are reading!  I am super proud!

Wednesday, November 9th

This morning Mrs. Neumeyer's class led us in chapel.  They used Pete the Cat to teach about walking the right way.  Sometimes we may walk into things we shouldn't but because we are forgiven we can always walk with Jesus.

We practiced for our math test tomorrow.  The children will be tested on proof drawings, expanded form, adding 2 digit numbers, adding 3 and 4 digit numbers, comparing numbers and word problems.

In computers the children learned about what it means to be a president!

During Daily 5, we met in small groups to play an antonym matching game.  They had fun finding matches to their antonyms.

In science we learned about the Forest habitats: Woodland Forest and Tropical Rain Forest.

The best part of the day was watching James and the Giant Peach and eating gummy peach rings!!

Tomorrow is a half day with parent-teacher conferences after school and evening! I cannot wait to meet with you all!

Tuesday, November 8th

A little update since it has been a few days since posting:

Friday:
Art: The children made Indian Corn Projects which are outside of the classroom.  Look at how nice they turned out!

Games!  Thank you to the parents who volunteered. The children enjoy this time learning while playing games!

Monday:
We started our first pen pal letter today.  We wrote about second grade.
Reading Mentors:  The children all love to read and enjoy reading their books with the parents.

Today: ELECTION DAY!

The students started out their day by voting in school.  Each child had to tell the volunteer their name, then they got a ballot and went to vote.  We talked about how it is a responsibility we have as citizens to use our voice to help make decisions.  We also talked about how this is a private election and they do not need to share if they choose not to.

In phonics we are learning about digraphs.  We talked about CH, SH, WH, and PH.  We learned that they make 1 sound.  Then we played Change the Word where the children make new words using blends and digraphs.  Each side of the room played against each other.  The right side of the room won today! Great job using our skills!

Today in math we practiced adding three and four addends.  We talked about different ways to add them.  We could line them all up and add or make multiple addition problems.  Students were able to choose which was worked best for them!

In Gym the children practiced serving over the net in volleyball.

Handwriting:  We had the capital F.  Check out today's All-Stars.

The children learned how to address letters today as we completed our pen pal letters and put them in the mailboxes!

We finished our book, James and the Giant Peach and will begin watching it in class tomorrow!

Thursday, November 3rd

We started our day with our morning devotion talking about not giving false testimony against our neighbors.  We talked about how our words can hurt others.  We need to work on using kind words.  I had each of the children turn to the person to their right and then to their left and tell them something nice.  We all agreed how great it made us feel.

In math we got out our math boards and secret code cards.  We built numbers, practiced expanded form and drew our proof drawings.  Then we worked more on 2 digit addition with our page in the book.

The children checked out new books today in library.  They were excited with their choices and couldn't wait to read them!

Our letter for today was the uppercase E.  Check out our two friends who rocked it out on their handwriting!

In science we made food chains using colored paper.  The yellow represents the sun, the green represents the grass/tree/plant, the brown represents a bug and the red represents the top of our food chain.  Ask your child what they made their food chain!

We also talked about who are the predators and who are the prey.  Then we watched our favorite show!  THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS!

We explored the half note today through movement.  We sang a song called "Jubilee!"  We walked on the quarter notes, jogged on the eighth notes and did the slide for the half note that last 2 beats.   After we said chugga-chugga on the eighth notes, choo-choo on the quarter notes and toot on the half notes.  The children had fun today in music.

Over in Mrs. O'Meara's room for Weekly Reader they read about Beavers on the Go!

Wednesday, November 2nd

Today Mrs. O'Meara's 2nd grade class led chapel.  They talked about how we use our gifts in different ways.  Some of the children brought in shoes from their parents or grandparents.  They stood in their shoes and shared how they use those shoes to serve the Lord.  Some were nurses who help people and some were police officers who protect us.  Then they held up the shoes and there were crosses on the bottoms of their feet.  It helps to show us that in  our daily walk we all serve the Lord differently.

We had show and tell today!  #11, 12, and 14 brought theirs in.  Here is what they brought!

The students learned about food chains and food webs in science.  Tomorrow we will do a small project with food chains!

We wrote about our favorite candy today!  Mine is 100 Grand!  The children shared what their favorite candy is during Author's Corner!

The children got to play a fun math fitness game today!  Math Fact Fluency Fitness!  Ask your child about it!

Tuesday, November 1st

Today is the first day of November!  I cannot believe how fast the year has gone so far.

This mornings devotion was about the 8th commandment: You shall not steal.  We discussed that stealing is not just physical items but it can be stealing of time.  We gave the example of school.  When we are learning and we talk we are stealing our learning time.  That can lead into some of our fun time!  When we work hard and use our time wisely we are often rewarded with fun time in class.

In phonics, the children wrote their spelling words and marked them according to if they are voiced or voiceless.  Voiced have a ~ line underneath and a voiceless has a - line underneath.

Today in math we continued working on our 2 digit addition.  I introduced the students to another way to add 2 digits.  They could start from the left and add the tens then add the ones to get to the number.  Example:

Many of the children prefer the normal way of starting in the ones place, regrouping if necessary and then adding the tens.  Either way is fine with me.  It is just a different approach that may help some students!

During reading we once again read with a partner.  Some friends got to read in groups of 3 because we have an odd number.  They all read, Farfallina and Marcel.

After we talked about the different ways to make the Long I sound.  It can be spelled with an i, ie, igh, or y.  Then we discussed our vocabulary words from the story.

The children had gym today and they are learning volleyball concepts.

For handwriting we had the uppercase C.  We have 3 friends in our class that have last names that begin with the letter C.  Check out our top 2 handwriting friends today!

We are going back to science now.  We are learning about Habitats.  We read about different places plants and animals live.  Then we did our class outline and watched The Magic School Bus.

In grammar the children learned about Possessive Nouns.

We ended the day with reading James and the Giant Peach and a few rounds of Sparkle!
