Week of May 15-19

Monday: H is for Hat Day
We began learning about Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.  We talked about how we need to do things that are pleasing to God and not things that are pleasing to ourselves.
Today's math stumped many of the children.  We had to borrow two different times.  We did a few on the board together to help them understands.  We will continue to work on this concept as it requires many steps.

In phonics we reviewed when we use the K ending, CK ending, KE ending and the C ending.  We came up with words for each of them.

In reading we read about African American Inventors.  We learned what a biography was as well.

In science we learned about our Solar System. We talked about the different planets and how unique each of them are.


We started illustrating CH.2 of our Stanley and Stacey books.
We ended with our LAST READING MENTORS.  The children got to bring in their favorite books to read.


Tuesday: I is for Ice Cream



We played panic this morning to practice words with the K sound at the end with the different endings.  

In math we did more 3 digit subtraction when we regroup twice.  Since many students struggled we needed to work more on this concept to help them understand.

We watched The Magic School Bus in the afternoon about our solar system.

We worked on our articles and adjectives for grammar today,

We started rewriting Ch. 2 of our Stanley and Stacey Books.

Wednesday: J is for Jump Rope 

We had our Pray and Praise Chapel this morning.  The Kindergarten classes began joining us today for chapel to prepare them for next year!

In math we did addition and subtraction of our 3 digit numbers.  

We worked in small groups during science to do our practice test for our science test next week.  

We finished writing our chapter of Stanley and Stacey.  

We ended by sharing our Book Floats!!  They turned our wonderful!  Such a great selection of books the children shared.


Thursday: K is for Kickball
We read the story when Peter denied Jesus.  We talked about how we need to confess our sins but also share the love of Jesus.  Peter is a great example of how we can sometimes be scared when we do something wrong, but when we experience His love, we should share it with others!

We wrote our memory:

We subtracted money and worked on estimating 3 digits.
We went outside for a fun game of kickball!  Even numbers vs odd numbers.  The game was a tie!!

We did a practice test to prepare for our science test.  The children did a great job!

We learned about adjectives that compare.
We switched with Mrs. O'Meara.  We did GoNoodle Call and Repeat songs for music and they learned about how weather effects our food in Weekly Reader.

Friday: L is for Lights Out
We did practice of addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers.  The more we practice the better we are getting.

We wrote to our friends for the LAST TIME in 2nd grade.

We did a review spelling test of our 4th quarter words.

We had Art.  We only have 1 more Art class this year.

We had our LAST games day.  Children brought in their favorite games to share!

Week of May 8-12

Monday:
Poppleton One Room School Field Trip!



Tuesday: C: Cards and D: Dance Party
Back to 2017 today!

In phonics learned the OO sound that sounds like ZOO.  We put bars on the OO like ZOO bars to help remind us of the sound it makes.

In math we did 3 digit addition when we regroup twice!

We read our story for the week.  It is an autobiography of the author who wrote Mice and Beans.

We wrote and said our memory today as well!
We also started writing Ch 2: Poppleton with Stanley or Stacey.

In science we learned about the seasons and why we have the seasons.

We got to do our C for the day!  CARDS!  We played Old Maid and Rummy!!





We ended our day with D; DANCE PARTY!!




Wednesday: E is for Electronic Day!
We started with Chapel.  Mrs. Barnes' class shared about what our footprints say.  We all leave behind footprints.  What will your footprint say about you!?  Were you walking worthy?

After chapel we went outside to trace our shadows.  We went out 3 times, once at 9, again at 11, and again at 2.  This shows us that the earth rotates each day and we see that by where are shadows are located.


In math we began working on 3 digit subtraction.  Today we only borrowed from the tens and brought them over to the ones place.

We learned the other sound the OO makes.  The sound like look.  We draw eyes in the oo to remind us which OO sound it says.

We learned about the Moon and the Stars in science.

We finished writing chapter 2 of our Stanley and Stacey stories.  Only one more chapter left!!

In the afternoon we made our Mother's Day gifts :)  The children are all blessed with such amazing Christian mothers!!

Thursday: F is for Flip Flops

In religion we read about Jesus washing the disciples feet.  We talked about how low of a job that was and what a honor it was for them to have Jesus do that for them.  We talked about serving others and how we are a blessing to many that we meet daily by our words and actions.

We wrote our memory:


We learned how to subtract and borrow 2 times from both the tens and the hundreds.  

We talked about using facts from our story to draw conclusions.  Then we had to read the clue and guess the animal.

For science we did Oreo Moon Phases.  We represented the new moon, first quarter moon, full moon and last quarter moon with our Oreos.


We also watched The Magic School Bus
We learned when to us A or AN as the article in our sentences. 
We ended reading our Weekly Reader about Chameleons.


Friday: G is for Glasses
This morning we had our walk-a-thon!  We walked from 9-11.  Many of the children got between 12-16 laps and 1 student had 22!!  We exceeded our goal of $25,000.  To God Be The Glory!

The rest of the day was a easy and fun day: Art, Recess and we played 4 corners for games!

Week of May 1-5

Monday:
We finished our 7th book in religion today! We read the story of Zacchaeus.  We learned how Jesus comes to seek and save the lost.
We wrote the last part of the apostles creed today too!

In math we practiced putting 3 digit numbers in order greatest to least and least to greatest.  We also did more comparing of numbers.



We learned another special vowel sound in phonics.  We learned that oi and oy make the oi sound like oil.  We brainstormed some oi and oy words.


Tuesday:
We finished saying the Apostle's Creed today.  Friday the students will say the WHOLE THING if they have not already.

We played change the word today in phonics!  The teams tied!!  Great Job!

We did 3 digit addition today.  We regrouped just the ones as tens today.

In reading we practiced the dge and ge endings that make the /j/ sound.  We also worked with the vocabulary words from our story and put them in ABC order.

We wrote a poem about May for handwriting.


We met with the 1st graders for the last time to practice our song that we sing THIS SUNDAY!

In science we learned about the changes we see in weather.  We learned about different kinds of weather and storms.

During Grammar we worked on adjectives.



Wednesday: DECADE DAY!

In honor of our 150th school year the children got to wear clothing from any of the decades the school was in session.  We had children from many different decades!  It was super cute to see everyone!

We had a special chapel celebrating our school led by Mrs. Finkel, who also went to this school when she was younger!

In  math we practiced 3 digit addition where we regroup in the ones and the tens.

We had extra gym today so we went from computer to gym!

We watched The Magic School Bus for science about weather.


We ended when we rewrote our chapter when our Stanley or Stacey came to school with us!

Thursday:
 We got a new book in Religion.  We read about Palm Sunday.  Even though we already celebrated it, we now get to read more about it and how it began Holy Week.

Then we got into small groups and got different slips of papers with the words of the Apostle's Creed on it.  The groups had to put the Apostle's Creed in order to help them practice.  It was a fun team work activity!









We did more 3 digit addition today in math.  The children are doing a great job with regrouping twice!

During reading we talked about reality vs fantasy.

We began Ch 9 in science.  We are talking about Day and Night.  We did an experiment where the children held a globe and a flashlight to show how its sunny on one side of the earth and dark on the other.
We worked on more adjectives.  This time, we talked about how adjectives can tell how many.

We switched with Mrs. O'Meara for weekly reader and music. In music we got out the instruments and used them to represent different parts of our Loose Tooth song.  In weekly reader they learned about Recycling.


Friday:A: Animals and B: Bubbles Day



The children had to say the WHOLE APOSTLES CREED today.  It was tough but we got through it!

In math we continued to practice our 3 digit addition.  The children are really understanding how to do this very well!

The children all wrote to me in their journals today.  I wrote back to them during my break!  I cannot believe I will only write to them 1 more time this year!

Today was the teacher appreciation luncheon.  Mrs. Carper came in in the afternoon while I was out at the lunch.

After the children watched VeggieTails.
Then the children had ANOTHER indoor recess.  I wish this rain would just stop!!
We ended playing some of favorite games!
