Week of January 18-20

It was so nice to not only have Monday off but then to have a surprise day on Tuesday!  It was nice to see everyone back here on Wednesday.

Wednesday:
We kicked off our Hearts For Jesus Campaign 2017.  We are helping kids in the Detroit urban area learn about Jesus as they participate in sport's summer camps through Kids2Camp.  The children brought home coin boxes that they will return each week.  If each week the 2nd grade class can bring in $40 we can have a jeans day the following Wednesday.  Pray about our mission project, tell others about it and give!

In science we learned about physical and chemical changes.  We tore, folded, and crumbled up paper to show physical changes.  I burned a piece of paper to show a chemical change.  I also cut a apple in half (physical change) then we let it sit out and when the apple mixed with the air it underwent a chemical change.  The children enjoyed seeing these examples.

Thursday:
We read about Elijah and the Ravens in religion.  We learned that through everything God is there and will always help us just like Elijah.

We worked on addition and subtraction word problems in math.

We watched the 4-8 graders participate in the Geography Bee.  Congrats to Mitchell in 8th grade for 1st place!

Today in handwriting we had the uppercase R.  Check out our remarkable all stars!

We got to do 2 experiments in science. We learned about how states of matter can change so first, we guessed how long it would take an ice cube to melt. Leighton guessed 100 minutes and Max guessed it would melt at 3:08.  It melted at 2:45, just 5 minutes before Leighton had guessed so Leightom and Max got a reward.  Then, we wanted to see if we added the heat from our mouths to Popsicles what would happen.  We quickly found out they melt, and taste yummy too!

We finished reading The Boxcar Children today.  Our BLURT dessert for tomorrow is to watch the movie!!

Friday:
We started by reading a devotion about Our Daily Bread.  We talked about how God provides our needs and how each of our needs are different.  We all took turns saying our memory too!

In math we practiced word problems with 2 digit addition and subtraction.

We did a fun science experiment this morning.  The children put a liquid (cream) in a jar and put on a lid.  We took turns shaking the jar.  When we added the air to the cream it turned into BUTTER!  The children all got crackers and tasted their experiment!!  YUMMY!

Some of our friends performed a play for us in class!  What a wonderful job they did!

The children had art and made chalk hearts.

We ended this short week with our favorite thing: GAMES!!

Next week is a super fun week!  We will be celebrating NLSW!  Thank God for Lutheran Schools!

Week of Jan 10-Jan 13

Tuesday:
What a morning we all had!  I am glad we made it here safe!

We made it outside for recess today to play in the snow!  It was great packing snow!  The children made enormous snowballs outside.

We did an experiment to show that liquid takes it container by pouring the same amount of liquid in different shaped containers.  We also saw how a balloon is blown up and heard the gas coming out and saw when you let go of a object with gas, the gas makes it move.

We had the uppercase B today for handwriting.  Check out today's brilliant all stars.

Wednesday:
We had Chapel led by the 7th graders from Mr. Williams class. He taught us about listening.  We discussed why we listen, when we listen and who we listen to.  Did you know that the world silent is spelled with the same letters at listen!?

The children had 2 specials back to back today!  How lucky!

This afternoon we got a chance to watch the 5-8th graders in the school spelling bee.  The children enjoyed seeing some of their siblings, and chapel leaders.  Congrats to Phoebe who came in 1st for the 2nd year in a row and Nathan for coming in 2nd as a 5th grader!

Thursday:
The children got to being in a stuffed animal today because NO ONE lost a BLURT cube yesterday!

We talked about how Jesus blessed the children.  We talked a little bit about our Baptism and how all are welcome to this free gift.  We read how The Disciples were trying to push the children away but Jesus welcomed them with open arms.  Jesus loves all people, young and old!

Our letter for handwriting was the uppercase P!  Check out these "Pretty" all stars

During science, the children shared some of their solids, liquids and gases that were in their houses. Some were alike and some were different!

We learned about Cause and Effect today in reading.  We wrote a Cause and Effect Chart from our story, Click, Clack, Moo.

During music the children worked in groups to clap a 4 beat rhythm using half-notes, three quarter-notes, and eighth-notes and rests.

For Weekly Reader the children learned about our new President, Donald Trump.

Friday:

In math the children were really challenged.  We we working with 3 digit subtraction when we subtract with zeros.  We did MANY of them together.
The children had art this afternoon they worked on painting their flowers.

We ended our day with GAMES!  What fun!

Remember: No school on Monday!  Enjoy your day off!

Monday January 9

Monday:
We began talking about the season of Epiphany.  It is when the wise men visited Baby Jesus.  We will be in this season until we begin Lent.

We are still plugging along with our 2 digit subtraction.  The children are doing very well!  I am so proud!

Our story this week is Click, Clack Moo!  This is a favorite of many in class!

We practiced adding suffixes to phonetic skill 4 words. (Words that end with the silent e).  We learned to drop the e and add the suffix!

We learned about solids today for science.  We did an experiment about how solids fall.

We wrote about if we could invent anything what would it be?!
We had reading mentors today with our parents!  Great reading everyone!

Thursday, January 5th

For this mornings devotion we talked about Jesus and Christmas.  We said things we would give Jesus as a baby.  I reminded the children that just like Christmas when we give gifts, Jesus gave us the best gift of all and we can give Him gifts daily by being kind, helping others, and sharing the Gospel with others.

We dove into 2 digit subtraction with regrouping today.  We learned that when the BOTTOM is BIGGGER, we BORROW.  The students are slowly understanding, but we will continue to practice, practice, practice!

We talked about summarizing today during reading.  We picked 3 main ideas from our story, Dancing As A Team and then wrote a summary about those. The children also read 3 different examples and had to find what the summary was about those.

Today's letter for handwriting was the lowercase r.  Check out our "remarkable" all stars.

In Science, we did a classifying crackers experiment.  Each child was given 5 different crackers.  Then they had to write down their properties such as size, color, shape, how it feels, how it smalls, how it tastes and how it sounds.  The children enjoyed this experiment!

During Weekly Reader the children learned about Martin Luther King Jr.

During Music the children learned about beats with on beat, two beats, two sounds and rests.  They took turns picking the cards out and placing them in the correct spot for the beats.

Tomorrow:

SPIRIT/LIONS DAY!  Students can wear jeans and spirit wear or jeans and lions apparel to support them for Saturday's playoff game!

Homework sheet due!

Wednesday, Jan 4th

Today's chapel was led by Mrs. Reincke.  She took us back to summer with a VBS themed chapel.  We had the drums and guitars rocking out to wake us up this morning.  We sang some of our favorite songs from this summer's VBS.  We were all given leis too!  What a great way to start our week back here at school!  Each child also got a flip flop keychain.

Today in math we used the base ten blocks to help us understand borrowing.  We learned about taking a stick away from the tens place and adding ten ones then to the ones place.  This is to get us ready to do 2 digit subtraction with borrowing.

The children decorated envelopes for the schools auction while they ate their snacks.  How cute and creative the children were!

We had 4 friends bring in a new Christmas toy for show and tell today.  Check out these cool gifts!

In science we learned about describing matter.  We talked about the properties such as size, shape, color and how we can measure matter by its mass.
We made a venn diagram of a pencil vs a marker.  They are both matter but how are they alike and how are they different?!

We ended our day by sharing our stories from yesterday about over break or what we got for Christmas.

We implemented a new system in class today to help up from talking out of turn and without raising out hands.  Each child got 5 cubes with the letters BLURT written on them.  Throughout the day, if they BLURTED they flip a letter over.  The goal is to have the word BLURT still on your cubes at the end of the day.  If they do not lose a BLURT cube, they earn a BLURT DESSERT.  Each day will be a different reward from candy, extra play time, sit with the teacher at lunch ect.  It is a great way for the children to become responsible for their voices and to remind them to raise their hands.  If they lose all 5 blurt cubes, they have to fill out a blurt alert sheet on why they blurted and how they can fix it.
