Happy Reformation Day!  499 years ago Martin Luther nailed the 95 thesis to the church wall!

Today as a class we discussed Reformation Day and how brave Martin Luther was to take a stand and to help the other German people read the Bible and see exactly what God was saying!

We are still working on 2 digit addition.  The children are doing a great job with this concept.  Today we used whiteboards to review before we did our assignment!

In phonics we are learning that some letters are voiced and some are voiceless.  Voiced means you can feel it vibrate on your throat when you talk.  We went through some letters in the alphabet with our hands on our throat to figure out which ones are voiced and which ones are voiceless.  Have your child show you some examples!!

We had a short day today but it was very fun!

TOMORROW:
BOOK IT SHEETS ARE DUE!  GOAL IS ALWAYS 300 MINUTES.  IF THEY READ OVER 300 MINUTES THEY GET AN EXTRA STICKER.

THE CHILDREN CAME HOME WITH THEIR NOVEMBER BOOK IT!  GOAL AGAIN 300 MINUTES!

DON'T FORGET IF YOU HAVEN'T RETURNED YOUR CHURCH ATTENDANCE SHEET PLEASE DO SO ASAP!!

HAPPY MICHIGAN/MICHIGAN STATE DAY!!

The students all recited their memory today, Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you and you shall glorify Me. Psalm 50:15.  We have been talking about how we always need to turn to God when we need help because He will help us in the right ways, and with that we should be praising Him for all He does for us.

We are still working on 2 digit addition!  They are all doing really well with this new concept.  I am very proud and impressed with their skills!

Today the children got to write to their friends in class.  The children were able to choose today.  I was glad with their choices.

We had the lowercase f today for handwriting.  2 of my friends were picked for fantastic handwriting. Check them out!

The children had art class this afternoon and worked on Witch Hats. They all turned out very cute!!

Since the children had a great day yesterday and because it was a beautiful fall afternoon we had an extra long recess!  Great job friends

But the best part of any Friday is

GAMES!!!

The children were able to play Even Stevens Odds, Great States Junior, Buzz Word and Place Value Mystery House.

I pray everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend with their families.

Wednesday and Thursday

Wednesday, October 26th

We celebrated one of friends 8th birthdays today!  God's Blessings on another wonderful year!!

Today we had a Pray and Praise Chapel.  We met with our chapel families, shared our prayer requests and then headed down to the Worship Center.  We talked about Martin Luther and Reformation Day.  Reformation Day is Monday, October 31st.  That is the day Martin Luther nailed the 95 thesis to the church door.  The children learned about the 3 Sola's: Grace Alone, Faith Alone and Scripture Alone.
Grace Alone helps us remember that God is so loving He gives us Grace even we we don't deserve it, Faith Alone helps us remember its not what we do but what He did, and Scripture Alone helps us remember that the Bible is from God and Him alone.

We are beginning 2 digit addition in math.  The students learned that you cannot have more than 9 ones and they you need to trade them in and add them to the tens place.  We used magnetic tens and ones to show this on the board.

The children had computer lab where they practiced typing in Type to Learn.  After they went right to gym.  Today the children got the extra gym for the month!  How lucky to have 2 specials back to back!

Today at lunch we had some friends share their show and tell.  A friend had their mining gems from camping, another friend brought their souvenir from Epcot that showed all the countries they visited, another friend brought their favorite stuffed animal, and we had another friend bring in her baby dolls.  Ask your child who brought what!

We studied for our social studies test by playing Jeopardy today.  The student worked in their small groups to answer the questions.  They did very well!  They all received Smarties for being my Smarties :)

We wrote today about what we were going to be for Halloween, then the children shared with the class.  I wish I could see each of them in their costumes!  They all sound very creative and cute :)

At the end of the day we have a little free time so we got to play Freddy Oka!  They really love that game!!!

Thursday, October 27th

We took our social studies test today.  Before we did, we all stood up and did some exercises to get our brains awake and focused.

We did some more 2 digit addition today.  Today the children did addition problems and had to bring the 1 on the top of the tens digit.  Its a little difficult but we are getting the hang of it.

The students got to check out new books today in Library!  Enjoy reading those with your child :)

We worked on sequencing today and the children came out to the hallway in small groups to play a sequencing game.

For religion the children learned about The Call of Gideon.  Gideon is like many people in our world.  When bad things are happening they doubt in God.  Many times they need to see proof before they will believe.  We talked about how God is always there in the good times and the bad and they we will experience both of those times.  It is in all of those times we need God.  We need God always!!

At the end of the day the students switched classes.  All of the boys went to Mrs. O'Meara's class for our Weekly Reader and all the girls came to my room for music. In Weekly Reader they children learned about Leaf Little Critters.  In music the children got to play a game where they passed a ball on the half-note pulse.  Then faster on certain words.  The child holding the ball at the end of the song is out and gets to play an instrument for the last 3 words of the song.  They children had fun playing the game and the instruments.

TOMORROW:

Tuesday, October 25th

Tuesday, October 25th

This morning we began our day with a devotion about the 5th commandment:  You shall not murder.  We discussed that it didn't just mean the taking of ones life but when we are not kind to our neighbors.  Then we talked about ways we can be nice and kind to one another.  The students came up with helping them on the playground, standing up for friends being bullied, saying compliments about one another.  We then talked about our mission project for our community.  We are collecting food for Thanksgiving Baskets.  2nd graders are asked to bring in canned pineapple.  I explained how great it is that we can provide for others in our community.  This is a way we can love our neighbors! We prayed for the families that would receive these baskets.  Continue to pray for these families as well and that through these baskets they see the love of Jesus.

We got to read to our friends today.  Each student chose a friend from class they haven't read with yet.  They did a great job reading and helping make each other better readers.

In gym the students played a game similar to Pac Man.  A few students were it and they had to get their friends.  They needed to stay on the lines of the gym floor however.  It looked fun....I wanted to join in :)

Each time the children have handwriting sheets I look for the 2 friends who did their very best work!  Check out who got their work on the board and an extra sticker for their chart!

Monday, October 24th

Today in religion we read The Battle of Jericho.  The children matched around, playing their trumpets to act out the Lord's Army.  Then on Day 7 the children shouted and the "walls came down".  We talked about our memory verse and how we should call on Jesus at anytime when we need Him.  Just like He helped Joshua He is always there to help us too!!

We all went down to the computer lab to work on our DreamBox lessons.  They all did a great job!  I am proud of how much progress they have all made this year.  Since the beginning of the school year our class has averaged 84 minutes a week and 7 lessons a week as well!  They continue to exceed my expectations and it shows daily in their work!

Today, I got to each lunch with one of my students.  Ask your child who got to each lunch with their teacher ;)

The children were excited to write today.  Today's topic was If I were trapped in the school overnight...  Don't worry parents, you will get to read them at conferences.

Wednesday, October 19th

Wednesday, October 19th:

Today in math we worked on expanded form for our numbers.  The children used their math boards and secret code cards to solve and write new equations.   The children are coming home with a family note as well as their own set of secret code cards to use at home!

We had 5 friends share their show and tell today!  Here are the items they brought in!  Ask your child to tell you who brought what and what they are.

For writing we wrote noun stories.  As a class we picks 3 nouns.  1 person, 1 place and 1 thing. We chose a dog, a girl and a park. Then the children used their imaginations to write a story about those.  After recess we had Authors Corner and each child got to share their noun story!  We all enjoyed listening to them.  Great job writing today!

First Blog!

Welcome 2nd Grade Parents and Students

The teachers had a wonderful time at their conference.  While there, I learned about adding a blog for our class.  At the end of each day I will post to our blog with some things we did during the day.  I will also add pictures of things we did.  The pictures will not be of your children's faces for safety reasons and will never have their names.

I look forward to sharing with you what we are doing in school.  I encourage you to use our blog to help facilitate conversations with your child.

MONDAY
Yesterday, October 17th, the children had a special chapel service led by Mr. Saving from CCCS Lead a Child.  The children learned about schools around the world that they support.  The children all got to take a tour of some of the classrooms from those schools.  Mr. Saving will also be taking the suitcases we filled up with the school supplies to his church so they can be transported to Haiti.
